Abstract

Elastic Cloud Computing Cluster (EC3) is a tool that creates self-managed cost-efficient virtual hybrid elastic clusters on top of Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) Clouds. These self-managed clusters have the capability to automatically adapt the size of the cluster to the workload, thus creating the illusion of a real cluster without requiring an investment beyond the actual usage. They can be fully customized and dynamically and automatically enlarged and shrunk (in terms of the number of nodes) depending on the number of jobs queued up at the Local Resource Management System (LRMS). EC3 can also deploy hybrid clusters across on-premises and public Cloud resources, where on-premises resources are supplemented with public Cloud resources to accelerate the execution process by accessing an additional number of resources, thus introducing Cloud bursting capabilities. EC3 is conceived to facilitate the use of virtual clusters to its users. It offers a web-based service (EC3aaS) that facilitates the usage of the tool to non-experienced users. This portal has been integrated in the EGI Long Tail of Science (LToS) service. The EGI LToS allows small laboratories and individual researchers the access to a wide range of computational resources and on-line services to manage and analyse large amount of data. The EC3 LToS portal enables to provision virtual elastic clusters on top of EGI FedCloud resources using the EC3 tool, integrated with the EGI authorization mechanisms. The portal provides the user with guided wizards to configure and deploy the cluster. The poster provides further insights about EC3 and its integration with the EGI LToS.
